Falcons off to rocky start in the Conference

The Falcons have been off to a rocky start during the 2008 Conference Season.  They have lost their first 3 conference matches to Wilkes Central, North Surry and Surry Central.  Previous meetings with Wilkes Central and Surry Central earlier in the season resulted in wins for the Falcons but the conference matches yielded much different results.

I felt that some of wrestlers competed very well in all three contests and some of our team didn't come to wrestle.  The unforunate part is because of our inexperience in some weight classes our veterens aren't allowed to have a "bad match".  We have also had some injuries, sickness and discipline issues that have resulted in a few forfeits and some very young backups being put in the lineup at the last minute.  It's unforunate but like Junior Johnson said "We run what we brung."  We like to leave excuses out of the mix.

We have had some key victories and these are the few that stand out.  Chris Daniels had a great match and had a large margin of victory before scoring a a fall vs. Ryker Benson of WC.  Austin Groce fighting a stomach illness sucked it up and kept his match close against Joel Caudill of WC.  And Dillon Dunn countered a throw against Grayson Cohn of WC and put him on his back.  Cohn fought off only to be put on his back again by Dunn.  Cohn eventually got out and pinned Dunn but it really was exciting.

Christian Harris won an exciting triple overtime victory over #1 ranked Jed Martin of Surry Central.  In the same match Josh Howard won an very close win in double overtime over Stephan Manyard of Surry Central.

Next up - Ashe County on Friday Jan 18th.

"Banged up" Falcons push through it and finish 3-2 at T.W. Andrews Duals

Forbush Wrestling

The Falcons suffering from injuries and a stomach virus manged to secure 3 wins at the T Wingate Andrews Duals on Friday Dec 21st.  The Falcons didnt have the services of 5 starters and several JV's on Friday.  Plus many of the remaining team members were battling injuries and/or sickness.  "It was a coaching nightmare!"  Who do you wrestle, who do you sit, who do you move to a different weight class, who gets a forfeit.  We did our best as coaches and as a team to "suck it up".  It helped that some of the teams we wrestled had key forfeits at certain weights. We also had some of our JV's step up and secure some wins - both Grey Watts and Jeff Foster got big wins against Thomasville.  Lil' Chris also looked good, especially against SWR.

We basically gave away 2 matches, against Southwestern Randolph and High Point Andrews.  We wrestled them 2nd and 3rd in the rotation, so I felt we needed to give some of the guys off so they could be ready against Thomasville and Salisbury.  It helped that the Andrews coach put some of his JV kids out there when we wrestled them.

I've been coaching for a while, but I can't ever remember having been banged up that much at the same time.  It was like we were an Army M.A.S.H. unit!

Scores:

Win vs Southern Guilford 43-27

Loss vs Southwestern Randolph 16-66

Loss vs Andrews 16-64

Win vs Thomasville 36-33

Win vs Salisbury 48 - 36

#1 ranked Jed Martin - Surry Central (placed 2nd 07) beat Christian Harris - Forbush, ranked 3rd by the score of 4-2. Great match between 2 outstanding men. Break down - 0-0 after the first, a few close TD's but none that count. 2nd period - Harris defers to Jed - Jed hits Granby almost scores a reversal but gets escape instead. 1-0 Martin. Harris almost scores on a deep sigle leg, Martin's hips prove too quick no TD. 3rd period Martin rides for :45 secs, Harris scores a reversal and rides for a while. Martin gets another Granby to an escape. Score tied 2-2. Harris tries a double gets caught in a front headlock. Both jockey for position with Martin scooting behind for a TD with 3 secs left. Final Score 4-2 Martin.

Christian Harris went 8-1 on the day and tied the school record

for career wins with 150, held by Josh Fleshman.

Thanks to all the teams who participated and thanks to all the parents for there support running the hospitality room and concessions. And congrats to the young Falcons for hanging tough a grinding out a 3rd place finish. Looks to be another close race in the MVAC again this year.

Make sure to check out the Gallery for picks from the year.  Thanks Dan Hicks.

West Montgomery has extra long bus ride home!

West Montgomery travelled about 1:45 to get to Forbush on Tuesday Dec 11th.  It might be the same amount of time back but it will seem longer after being beat by the Falcons 54-27.  The match started with Jeff Foster at 130. WM 6-0,  next up David Craig, craig got down early 5-0 only to be back in the match 5-3 but couldnt hold onto his pinning combination.  Austin Groce then scored a pin for the Falcons 6-9, in favor of WM.  Brent Deskins followed by Brett Baity both received forfeit wins. 18-9 Falcons.  Mike Lawson also had his man pinned but couldnt hold on and got pinned, 18-15.  Christian Harris racked up another pin for the Falcons 24-15.  Two more Falcons, Josh Bailey and Dalton Woodard give up pins, 24-27 WM.  The train then stopped for WM.  Josh Howard recorded another pin for the Falcons. 30-27 Falcons. Kenny Chavers, Jacob Johnson then received forfeits, 42-27 Falcons.  The Falcons finished strong with pins by Cody Tranter and Chris Daniels.  Falcons 54-27.  It was the Falcons 11th Dual meet win of the season.  Next up the Forbush Super Duals on Friday at 5:00pm, and Saturday the 15th at 9:00am for a total of 9 matches for the falcons and 45 total matches between 10teams!

Alleghany dominates the Falcons 60-18!

It wasnt a pretty night for the young Falcons against the defending 1A State Champions, Alleghany Trojans.  The Falcons started at 189 and were down 0-18 when they received a forfeit at 103.  The Falcons would score another team point again until Mike Lawson and Christian Harris both scored Falls at 160 and 171.

The Trojans were physical and very basic in there approach.  In your face, IOWA's (cement job), 1/2 nelsons, and a neck whip.  A few rode some mean double knives but for the most part they showed that "technique takes a back seat to brutality!"(Tom Brands, IOWA).  They got on us and we shut down tonight.  Hopefully we step it up in practice and dish some out at the upcoming Eden Holiday Classic!

Ashe County Duals Pool A Champions

The Falcons showed that they are a team to be contended with this season by winning their pool at the Ashe County Duals this weekend.  Forbush competed in this 12 team event by wrestling 5 teams in their pool and coming out victorious in each of their matches.

The Falcons made quick work of North Stokes by a score of 60-24.  Picking up pins were Dillon Dunn, Austin Groce, Mike Lawson, and Dalton Woodard.

Next up was  Conference foe, Ashe County.  The Huskies got off to a good start by winning the first 3 matches and going up 15-0 on the Falcons.  The Falcons quickly jumped ahead by recording pins in the next 9 out of 10 matches and won the match 60-21.

The hardest and most evenly matched dual of the day for the Falcons was the greyhounds of Statesville.  In a see-saw battle from 130-Hwt the two teams were deadlocked at 30-30 with 4 matches to go.  The Falcons needed to win 3 for a team victory and that is just what they accomplished.  Blake Hicks, Jacob Johnson and Cody Tranter help ensure the victory by recording pins after the score was tied up.

Next up was Holston VA.  The Falcons recorded an 84-0 victory with only 3 forfeits.  That could be a possible school  record.  I know we have beat teams before by shutting them out but I dont think we pinned 11 people.  This almost didnt happen when David Craig was losing 9-2 only to come back in the third period and pin his opponent.

The young Falcons win their first tournament!

The Falcons travelled to Ardrey Kell this past Wednesday to compete in the 10 team individual tournament.  The Falcons jumped off to an early lead and never reliquished it.  The following wrestlers placed:

1st place - Champions

Austin Groce - 140 pounds 3-0 on the day **First gold medal

Mike Lawson - 160 pounds 3-0 on the day**First Gold Medal

Christian Harris - 171 pounds 3-0 on the day

2nd place - runnerups

Chris Daniels -125 pounds 2-1

Dillon Dunn 130 pounds 3-1

Brett Baity 152 pounds 2-1

Josh Howard HWT 1-1

Other placers:

David Craig - 135 pounds 4th place 2-2

Cody Tranter - 119 pounds 6th place

Congrats to the Falcons who as a team WON the team title despite having only 11 weight classes filled!

HARD WORK! PAYS OFF!

Falcons Open with a Strong Showing at the Dudley Duals

The Falcons started the season with a 67-9 win over Berry Academy.

Next up for the Falcons were the athletic Dudley Panthers, the Falcons having to give up 2 forfeits due to injuried starters came up short in their quest to amke into into the championship pool by losing a close one 36-44.

The Falcons then received a forfeit win over Carborro.  Carborro, along with 2 other teams didnt show up to the 16 man showdown.

Hopewell was the next to fall to the Falcons.  This one was won by a score of 51-23.

In the 5th place match the Falcons met up with the Madison Patriots. The Falcons had beaten the Patriots 2 years ago in the State Duals but that would not be repeated today.  Patriots 58-21.  It did provide 2 of the most exciting matches for the Falcons.  The first took place with Chris Daniels at 125 lbs.  He had is opponent tied 9-9 after 2 periods when Chris got a nice TD in the 3rd and proceeded to get 4 sets of NF3's with a simple 1/2 nelson.  Chris went on to win 20-10!  The second exciting match came with the last match of the day with Christian Harris at 171.  Christian, a senior and the team captain, is on a quest to win a State Championship.  Coach Kota has told him he needs to be put in pressure situations all season to be ready in Feb.  Christian was to get 5 takedowns in the match, he did even better securing 9!  What was so exciting is that his opponent was grabbing Christians headgear and it was flustering him.  Christian was able to refocus his anger into positive wrestling and won the match 28-11 when it was stopped for a technical fall.

Overall the Falcons are showing great promise with a relatively young squad.  Next up, cross town opponent Reagan, on Tuesday.  Jv's will start at 6:00 and Varsity will follow.

Christian Harris goes 3-2 at the 2007 Super 32

Christian Harris had a good preseason warmup tournament this past weekend at the Nationally Ranked Super 32 tournament at the Greensboro Colosiuem.

Harris got off to a shaky start, it what appeared to be a replay of last years state tournament.  Harris matched up against Colin Leinhardt from VA.  Harris hit his patented double and went for a quick tilt , only to be caught in a reach back headlock and pinned.  The saving grace about this loss is that Colin went onto the semis and eventaually placed 6th. (0-1)

Next up, Harris had Alan Zimmerman from the always tough Bellfonte PA.  Harris was in a tight match until he escaped and hit a beautiful reshot double which all but "knocked out" Zimmerman.  It also gave Harris a mild concussion for the remaining tournament. (1-1)

Harris then had Matt Sharp from the state of Tennesee.  Harris handled him with a 9-2 win. (2-1)

Harris had his best showing of the tournament in his next match when he beat Jacob Williamson, a STATE CHAMP from GA.  He convincingly won with a daily SOP drill, a beautiful throw by, not once but twice.  Harris was in control the entire match, winning 6-2. (3-1)

Harris put everything he had into the next match against George Garcis from American FL.  Harris was tied 0-0 after 1.  Then Garcia got an escape early in the 2nd.  Harris went for a TD with 8 secs left in the 2nd only to be countered at the buzzer.  3-0 Garcia.  Harris went onto to get an escape in the 3rd.  He tried until the buzzer sounded and finished the match with a loss of 3-1. (3-2)

I think this was a "breakout" tournament for Christian.  He is learning to wrestle from Whistle to Whistle.  I think he really beleives in himself this year, I think that was lacking a little in years past.  Between camp and these high level matches in the preseason he is gaining that much needed confidence.  He could be the next State Champ Banner in the fieldhouse!
